Formålet med Lethian (og Lethinus) kampagnerne er selvfølgelig at få spillet noget Warhammer, og foregår grundlæggende som en almindelig turnering – man møder op med sin hær og spiller mod andre spillere hen over weekenden. Det der gør Lethian anderledes, er at kampene er en del af et større hele, så det er ikke kun er uafhængige kampe du skal vinde, og så vinder du turneringen.
I Lethian er alle spillere inddelt i hold, og hvert hold ejer nogle territorier (kaldet len eller provinser). Spillerne kan marchere rundt på veje der forbinder lenene, og hvis to modstandere mødes på et len, udkæmpes et Warhammer slag. Vinderen overtager lenet til sit hold. På en skærm kan man løbende holde øje med hvilke hold der ejer hvilke len, og hvor de forskellige hære befinder sig og er på vej hen.
It all takes place in real time, so while someone is playing Warhammer for a province, others are marching on the map. For example, it could be an ally marching around the province and attacking from the side. Suddenly, three players are fighting for the province, and the last army moves in from the side on the battlefield. What used to be a battle for the province, can now become a battle for the outnumbered player to hold out as long as possible, hoping that he can get reinforcements - or maybe hold off the other players while his teammates take now undefended provinces.
In this way, each battle becomes its own little scenario in the larger war that ravages the country. It is up to the players on the team to make plans for how to conquer as much land as possible, where to attack, where to defend, or which teams to try to make a deal with. Diplomacy is also part of the game, and considerations of when an alliance should be broken again is always something that is kept in the deepest secrecy.
At the end, the winners of Lethian is the team that has managed to hold the most land for the longest time. Each province gives campaign points over time to the team that owns it, and the team with the most campaign points in the end is the winner. You can also earn campaign points by winning a lot of battles, or by collecting a lot of gold.
